Depression is a serious condition that can seem to suck all the color out of your world. It can leave you feeling sluggish, alone, and overwhelmed by sadness. The good news is that research has revealed effective coping strategies that help many people manage their depression and enjoy a higher quality of life. This blog post shares a few of those essential skills.
Cognitive Restructuring
Cognitive restructuring involves identifying negative thoughts, questioning them, and altering them. For example, if you make a small mistake at your workplace, depression might tell you that you are a failure. Cognitive restricting allows you to see things more accurately. Everyone makes mistakes, you are good at your job, and it is possible to bounce back from mistakes.
Often, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a qualified mental health professional is the best way to master cognitive restructuring skills.
Physical Movement
Exercise might be the last thing you want to do when you are feeling down, but fortunately, even small amounts of movement can provide a powerful mood boost. A short walk, some gentle stretching, or even just moving around the room while you watch TV can clear your mind and release feel-good hormones in your body.
A Good Sleep Routine
Sleep deprivation interferes with processes in the brain that regulate emotion. Try to go to bed at the same time each night. If you find it difficult to fall asleep, you might need to cut back on caffeine, stop using your phone before bed, and make other changes. If insomnia or sleep difficulties persist, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional so they can help you understand the problem and get the needed help.
Journaling
Writing about your thoughts and feelings can help you understand and process them. You do not have to be a creative genius to journal. Even jotting a few notes each day can give your emotions a safe place to land so they do not stay in your head and continue to bother you.
Breathing Techniques
Nervous system dysregulation is often a part of depression. Intentional breathwork may be able to help. For example, you might try inhaling for four seconds, holding your breath for four seconds, and then exhaling for four seconds. Or, you can make your exhale longer than your inhale. Research different mindful breathing techniques and try them throughout your day. They may help with symptoms like irritability, tightness in your chest, and feelings of being frozen.
Depression is complex, and you should not hesitate to seek professional care for your symptoms. The techniques in this blog post may complement your treatment plan and help you see brighter days.
